A Snake and a Well

by Apr 30, 2026

Vision2020Asia has an active ministry of drilling wells in several Asian countries. It was born out of necessity in India. As of 2026, we have provided 14 tube wells with hand pumps for persecuted Christians in India.

The well ministry in India was started a few years back when one of our Vision2020Asia national evangelists entered a village with a young local church. He witnessed as the believers were gathering their drinking water out of potholes and ruts in the road that collected rainwater. Disturbed by the lack of sanitation, he was informed that their village elders had forbidden all Christians from using the village’s community well. After further investigation, our national evangelist discovered the following account.

The pastor of this young congregation had grown up in this same Hindu village. After finishing high school, he went to the city to attend the university. While away for several years at the city university, he met Christians who shared the gospel with him and led him to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. The new convert fellowshipped with the believers, studied the Scriptures, and became active in their local church. Eventually he returned to his home village to share this good news. What he had been looking for all his life he had found and wanted to share it with his family and friends!

When the pastor returned home, he began to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ and before long, dozens of villagers had trusted in Jesus Christ as their Savior. This local church grew to over 50 people in a short amount of time, but the village elders were not happy. One day the Hindu village elders brought a mob to confront the pastor of this church. The mob had decided to force the pastor outside of the village in order to murder him. As they passed under a large shade tree, a poisonous snake fell from the limbs above onto the murderous mob. The mob turned its attention on beating the snake to death as the pastor quietly slipped away. The superstitious Hindus took the experience with the snake as a sign from their “gods” that they should not murder the pastor so they fabricated a rule that this pastor and any others who begin to follow this Jesus were not permitted to draw water from the community well.

After hearing this sad event, we raised $1,800 to dig a tube well and install a hand pump on the pastor’s property so that he would have fresh drinking water. Of course, the pastor let the believers draw from the hand pump well, but he also allowed villagers access to the well. The well we dug was deeper and the water was better so many villagers came to draw from the pastor’s well. This tube well with a hand pump then became a evangelistic tool by which the pastor could share about the living water that comes from God from which one may drink and never thirst again (John 4:14).

On average, a tube well with a hand pump in India costs approximately $1,500 depending upon the location and the depth of the well. If you would like to contribute to helping persecuted Christians have fresh drinking water, you may give your donation by following the “DONATE” tab on this website—www.Vision2020Asia.org—and designating the donation: “wells”.
